Hoshikawa was once a thriving riverside burgh, its streets filled with the sound of fishmongers’ calls, rice brokers haggling over prices, and aristocrats quietly sipping tea in tranquil courtyards. Now, it is a settlement gripped by despair. An unknown sickness has swept through the eastern side of the river, leaving empty homes, crumbling markets, and abandoned shrines. The residents have fled to the western banks, praying the sickness doesn’t follow them across the river’s sluggish, murky waters.

The eastern half of Hoshikawa has been left to ruin, with weeds sprouting between the cobblestones and scavengers picking through the remnants of once-vibrant markets. The catacombs beneath the hills on the eastern shore, once places of reflection and ceremony, are now whispered to be the source of the sickness where someone dug a little too deep and released the wrathful spirits. Rogues and vagrants linger in the shadows, searching for opportunities in the decay, while the remaining burghfolk keep a wary eye on the river’s edge.

The western side of Hoshikawa struggles to carry on with some semblance of normalcy. The mountain shrines, perched on nearby hills, serve as a beacon of hope, with prayers and rituals offered daily in the desperate hope of halting the sickness. Fishmongers and rice brokers cling to their trades, ensuring the town’s survival, even as fear gnaws at their resolve. Aristocrats, though fewer in number, continue to oversee affairs, their once imperious manners softened by the shared plight of their people.

The line between survival and despair grows thinner with every passing day. In Hoshikawa, all eyes are on the river, watching for the first signs of sickness crossing the water. Time itself feels like it’s running out, but for now, the people cling to their rituals, their community, and the hope that their town can be saved.
