Once a thriving bastion of commerce and culture, Skavenholt is now a city on its knees. The gnashing teeth of flea-ridden rats and the unseen claws of plague have turned this proud metropolis into a shadow of its former self. Whole districts have been abandoned, cordoned off in a desperate attempt to stop the spread of the plague. The once-bustling avenues are now ghostly, their empty buildings echoing with the faint skitter of vermin.

Despite the chaos, the city limps forward. The Council of Counts still rules and merchants and craftsmen cling to their livelihoods, setting up markets and shops in the still-inhabited quarters, even as death carts trundle past, collecting the latest victims. The King has sent Knights and their squires to maintain order and fend off opportunistic skirmishers from the Vallin Desert, who raid the weakened outskirts. But the knights are spread thin, their shining armor dulled by the grime of desperation. Surprisingly a unexpected lifeline has been thrown to Skavenholt from other desert dwellers who have guided in large herds of livestock to help the endangered settlement.

The abandoned districts have become havens for scavengers, graverobbers, and vermin of both human and animal kind. Rats, fat and fearless, swarm the alleyways and markets, their presence a constant and chilling reminder of the city's plight. Emissaries from the court of the King work to maintain the fragile economy, bargaining for goods from brave importers who see the city with equal parts pity and greed.

Skavenholt's people, grim-faced but unbroken, continue their daily lives in the shadow of death. For every rat that gnaws at their hope, there is a trader selling wares, a knight patrolling the streets, or a town crier lighting a lantern to cut through the encroaching darkness. In Skavenholt, life and death dance hand in hand, and survival is the greatest victory.
